Wedding Officiant

The Bernards Township Mayor is available to perform weddings by appointment only at the Bernards Township Municipal Building. For an appointment, email: mayor@bernards.org

Marriage & Civil Union Licenses

Either partner must be a resident of the municipality of Bernards Township (Basking Ridge, Liberty Corner, Lyons). This license is good for use anywhere in NJ.  If both partners are non-residents of New Jersey, the license must be obtained from the Registrar of the municipality where the marriage is to be performed and is only good for use in that municipality. They can apply for a  license in Bernards Township only if the ceremony is taking place in Bernards Township.

How To Request a License

Fee:  $28 payable by check or cash.  Checks are to be made payable to:
"Bernards Township".

The marriage and civil union application process MUST be completed by both parties before the license will be issued. Applications for a license can be submitted up to six (6) months before the ceremony. Once the license is issued, it is good for 30 days*** from the date of issuance.  The registrar will not issue a license sooner than 72 hours*** after the application for the license has been made, unless ordered to do so via an appropriate court order.

Identification, such as a valid photo driver's license OR a passport accompanied by a utility bill, for both individuals applying for the license.  If one or both of the applicants are divorced or widowed, a copy of the final divorce decree(s) or certified death certificate(s) must be presented for examination by the Registrar.

Appointments must be made in advance by phone, 908-204-2520.  A witness 18 years or older must accompany the couple at the time of the application. This witness can be a relative.

Marriage, Civil Union, Birth & Death Certificates

Marriage & Civil Union Certificates are issued for those whose ceremonies were officiated in Bernards Township.  

Death Certificates are issued for those deaths that occur in Basking Ridge, Liberty Corner, and Lyons only.

Birth Certificates are issued for those births that occur in Basking Ridge, Liberty Corner, and Lyons only.

How To Request a Copy of a Certificate

Fee:  $20 payable by check or cash.  Checks are to be made payable to:
"Bernards Township".

Either spouse/partner and/or their parents can request a MARRIAGE certificate.  Both spouse/partners and/or their parents can request a CIVIL UNION certificate.  Only a direct family member, i.e. spouse, sibling, or child can request a certified copy of a DEATH certificate. Proof of relationship must be accompany the request. For example, a child would need to provide a full copy of their birth certificate showing their parents’ full names on the certificate.  BIRTH certificates can only be issued to a parent or the individual himself.

Identification showing proof of residency must accompany the request for a certificate, such as a valid photo driver's license or passport and utility bill.

Print and complete the certificate request and mail with a stamped self-addressed return envelope to the Bernards Township Health Department.

Domestic Partnerships

Couples wishing to register a Domestic Partnership must be same sex couples OR opposite sex couples who are both 62 years of age or older and provided that they meet the registration requirements.

How To Register a Domestic Partnership

Fee:  $28 payable by check or cash.  Checks are to be made payable to:
"Bernards Township".

The Affidavit of Domestic Partnership must be completed and signed by both applicants at the same time, in the presence of a notary. After completion of the Affidavit, the applicants must meet together with the local Registrar. It is advisable to make an appointment in advance. The Registrar will issue a Certificate of Domestic Partnership.

Identification must accompany a request for a certificate, such as a valid photo driver's license or passport.

Print and complete the form and return to the Bernards Township Health Department.
